THE FUTURE OF DISPLAY TECHNOLOGY

Displays are everywhere. In our hands, on our wrists, at work, in our cars – everywhere. How many hours per day do we spend in front of displays? More than the time we spend with our loved ones? But what are the side effects of being constantly exposed to different kinds of displays? In a recent TEDx Talk, CTO and co-founder of IRYStec Tara Akhavan explains the adverse side effects of displays on our health.

It is widely recognized that extensive viewing of displays can have negative side affects. Why would viewing images on a screen for long periods of time be any worse than looking at the image in real life? After all, the goal of the display industry is to present content that is as close as possible to what we see in the real world. But our visual system is very complex, designed to see and perceive the 3-dimensional world with all its shades of color, enormous level of detail and huge range of brightness. This system involves a tremendous amount of processing on the part of our eyes and brain. Physiologists have developed a deep understanding of how the visual system works, and over the last two decades their research has established the negative side effects that result when display use exceeds four hours a day. Nevertheless, device manufacturers have traditionally relied solely on image processing and hardware engineers to design their displays.

IRYStec, a leading innovator of perceptual display processing technology, unites the expertise of physiologists with the know-how of image processing and hardware engineers. Together, they have developed eye friendly software products that improve the visual experience of any display. These innovations, address the adverse side effects of screen exposure by reducing eye strain & fatigue.

There are three main factors that play an important role in how we see displayed images:

1) The ambient lighting

2) The viewer’s personalized visual system attributes

3) The display hardware characteristics

IRYStec’s Perceptual Display Platform (PDP) adapts, in real time, to each of the above-mentioned factors. The PDP is available as an embedded software platform which enables consumer device manufacturers and automotive OEMs to optimize their display viewing experience. The result is significantly improved readability across all ambient light conditions, while reducing eyestrain and improving power consumption.

IRYStec’s PDP is a collection of different perceptual technologies. IRYStec’s MOBILEvue product, addresses the first perceptual factor of our visual system mentioned above; namely, the ambient lighting. MOBILEvue senses the ambient lighting environment and adjusts the viewing content in real-time to ensure that the quality of displayed images is optimized, regardless of whether the viewing environment is dark, bright, or highly reflective. IRYStec’s PDP technology is designed to be easily integrated by OEM display device manufacturers, including mobile phones, tablets, automotive displays and Virtual Reality (VR) headsets.

IRYStec’s PDP technology is available to be easily integrated by OEM display device manufacturers, from mobile phones and tablets to automotive displays and Virtual Reality (VR) headsets. IRYStec will be demonstrating other Perceptual Display Platform technologies in 2017 that build on the improved viewing experience of MOBILEvue, tuning our displays to match how we perceive.
